Why Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
The teenager has featured in seven games for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.

He joined Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have belied his youth and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and movement."

The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.

Under international regulations, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. Things are great with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the win at Manchester.
