The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent development deepens the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur announced through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as an emblem for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
The new product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that was first established several years back for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Future Intentions
The founder revealed that he plans to develop other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns that the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, citing worries that its independence had been compromised after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for corporate autonomy so that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
