The Devastating Transformation Just One Year Has Brought in the US

Twelve months back, the environment was completely different. Before the US presidential election, considerate Americans could admit the nation's serious imperfections – its inequities and imbalance – yet they could still identify it as the US. A democracy. A country where legal governance carried weight. A nation led by a dignified and upright official, even with his advanced age and declining health.

Nowadays, this autumn, numerous citizens barely recognize the nation we reside in. Individuals believed to be illegal immigrants are detained and forced into transport, at times blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the “people’s house” – is being destroyed to build a lavish dance hall. Donald Trump is targeting his opponents or supposed enemies and requesting legal authorities hand over an enormous amount of public funds. Armed military personnel are deployed into American cities under fabricated reasons. The defense headquarters, relabeled the Defense Ministry, has practically liberated itself of regular press examination during its expenditure of what could amount to almost one trillion dollars in public funds. Colleges, law firms, news companies are buckling due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are regarded as aristocracy.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the world’s leading democracy, has crossed the brink toward dictatorship and fascism,” an American historian, stated in August. “Ultimately, faster than I believed likely, it transpired here.”

One awakes with fresh terrors. And it's hard to comprehend – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and how quickly it has happened.

However, it is known that the president was properly voted in. Even after his profoundly alarming initial presidency and even after the cautions linked to the knowledge of the conservative plan – following the president personally declared plainly he planned to be a dictator just on day one – a majority of citizens elected him over his Democratic opponent.

While alarming as the current reality is, it's more daunting to understand that we are just several months into this presidential term. What will an additional three years of this downfall leave us? And suppose the three years transforms into a more extended duration, as there is not anyone to stop this leader from opting that additional tenure is essential, perhaps for security concerns?

Granted, not everything is hopeless. There will be legislative votes the coming year which might create a new political equilibrium, if Democrats recapture either chamber of the legislature. There exist public servants who are attempting to exert certain responsibility, like Democratic congressmen that are initiating an inquiry regarding the effort to money grab from legal authorities.

And a national vote in the next cycle could begin the path toward restoration exactly as last year’s election placed us on this unfortunate course.

We see numerous residents protesting in the streets throughout communities, like they performed last weekend at democracy demonstrations.

An ex-cabinet member, wrote recently that “the great sleeping giant of the US is rising”, just as it did post-McCarthyism in the 1950s or throughout the Vietnam war protests or in the Watergate scandal.

In those instances, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.

Reich says he understands the signals of that resurgence and observes it occurring now. For proof, he points to the large-scale demonstrations, the widespread, multi-faction opposition regarding a broadcaster's firing and the largely united refusal by journalists to agree to government requirements they solely cover authorized information.

“The slumbering entity perpetually exists asleep until some venality becomes so noxious, an specific act so disrespectful of the common good, some brutality so noisy, that the giant has no choice except to rise.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Possibly he may turn out correct.

In the meantime, the crucial issues persist: will the nation regain its footing? Can it retrieve its standing globally and its adherence to the rule of law?

Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?

My cynical mind indicates that the second option is correct; that everything could be finished. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, convinces me that we must try, through all methods we can.

For me, as an observer of the press, that involves encouraging reporters to live up, more completely, to their duty of overseeing leadership. For some people, it could mean participating in political races, or organizing rallies, or discovering methods to defend voting rights.

Under twelve months back, we were in a separate situation. A year from now? Or three years from now? The truth is, we don’t know. Our sole course is try to continue fighting.
