Hardline Former Congressman J.A. Kast Elected as Chile New Leader.
After a definitive runoff election, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Built On Security and Migration
Known for his strong Catholic views and praise for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to combat rising violence and drastically reduce immigration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, particularly the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the election cycle, he delivered an ultimatum for them to leave before the new term begins or face removal.
His plans envisioned controversial measures such as constructing detention centers, high walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Broader Trend
Many observers interpret Kast's success as fitting into a wider conservative trend in Latin America, coming after recent electoral results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other analysts additionally view it as a part of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Clear Mandate
Despite his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to command an clear majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are combined together.
This political situation may hinder his policy goals, including a pledge to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not provided concrete steps.

The expert added, "In terms of the economy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies associated with the right-wing. However the area with considerably less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
