Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
A major resort island located on the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group for a sum reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, including a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
