Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate controversy from 2009-11, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the league found that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Latest Exchange
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback win over the Giants. Payton suggested that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" Payton commented.
Background of the Coach-QB Relationship
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million contract.
- The Broncos went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in broadcasting.
- Payton benched Wilson late into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.
If Wilson stayed on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
